Not Your Basic Bootcamp

It's here!  Fall officially arrived last week and that means it is a season of change.  As we gear up for the upcoming holiday season, are you ready to keep your mind, BODY, and spirit in check?  These next few months can start to get a little crazy and some of us become quite frazzled.  On top of that, we have a tendency to accumulate an extra layer of insulation that quite often stays around the mid section... I know I would prefer to add some extra layers of clothes instead of the extra layer of adipose tissue.  I would also like to enjoy some pumpkin bread from time to time.  Do not neglect your own health and wellness this season.  It should not have to take New Year's resolutions for you to get on track again.  Start now, NO EXCUSES!  It is always more fun to workout in a community of others.  Grab a friend, spouse, or family member- who is going with me? Click here for current schedule.

Fall bootcamps are here and FREE all October.  Come check us out and make some real change!  We want you going out with a bang in 2010 and getting an edge starting off 2011.  We have two locations in October for you to take advantage of.  Click here for our latest schedule.  Hope to see you soon!

Hop, Step, JUMP!

One of my favorite and inexpensive tools for workouts is a jump rope!  It is portable and will always keep your heart rate up.  I love to throw in jump rope for 1 minute increments in between my sets especially when weight training.  I want the heart rate elevated as long as possible so I can be burning the most calories possible in my limited time.

Now some of you may be coordination challenged and jump rope may not be footloose and fancy free for you.  You can replicate jumping rope without the actual rope by twirling those hands and "pretend" to jump over the rope for one minute.

Below I added some great inspiration for you to view.  This stuff is amazing!  I really think I secretly wanted to be these kids back in the day.

The number one excuse I hear for not working out is TIME.  Notice I said excuse, as we all have the same amount of time.  It is about priorities folks, but if this is a hindrance, then let's make workouts as effective as possible in the least amount of time.  If you do not have time in the schedule for both weight training and a good amount of cardio in the allotted time frame, then a jump rope will be a simple and effective solution.  Add it to your routine and let me know how it works for you.

The Back To School Edge iMix

Hey all!  Well it is official!  Dynamic Edge has made its move and is back settled in the Pacific Northwest.  Big move, back to school, back to routine, and now need some tunes to stay motivated for fall bootcamp training or whatever fitness activities suit your fancy.  Now I know it is gray, drizzly, and a little chilly already here in the Pacific Northwest.  That makes for a disaster on the motivation front for staying fit.  I know all I want is a nice warm Starbucks in my hand and to curl up with a blanket in front of the TV.  Why does this weather do this to me?  Some good tunes always tend to get me out the door.  I just found some awesome new trails to test out that included fern gully, lots of mud, and an endless supply of slugs (if you are not from the Northwest, then go Google slugs for a great picture of the lovlies we have around here).  Good thing for new trail shoes, so off running I go.  Happy fall training!

1. Dynamite- Taio Cruz
What can I say?  This song just makes me want to dance or RUN my hiney off.  Great beat to stay moving to.

2. DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love- Usher
Usher has some great ones and after some life experiences it appears his newest work will be great as well.  Another one that makes you want to boogie, so why not spin away to this or climb that next hill?!!

3. Ride to California- Paper Tongues
I have to say I really enjoy these guys.  Their blend of rock, rap, funk, pop fusion works for me.  Great song to pump out some extra reps with those dumbbells.  Plus, I think I am secretly missing California...

4. Alejandro (Dave Aude Remix)- Lady Gaga
This mix is really one I love for cycling.  It really helps me get in the zone on those flats.

5. Rusty Cage- Soundgarden
A classic one that I had to resurface.  Really enjoy this for a great strength training workout.  A little angry, rock motivation to get those last reps in.

6. For the Love of Money- The O'Jays
Really do not judge me, as I do not have a fascination for money...  I just really love the funk and soul of this song.  Great warm up into the real workout or for some climbs on that bike.

7. Misery- Maroon 5
I love that Maroon 5 is back.  Great, catchy tune that can pump up your workout.  Plus, the lyrics really stick with you.

8. I'm In Miami Trick- LMFAO
The clean version of course.  Just love some funk from LMFAO.  Great beat that will push you through that next mile.

9. Sweet Emotion- Aerosmith
Classic build here.  Steven Tyler and the greatness of Aerosmith in its finest.  Most of the time the song just brings me back to Dazed and Confused, but I love to rock out at the gym to this one.

10. California Dreamin' (Tekhouse Extended Mix)- Royal Gigolos
The first time I heard this was in spin class (thanks Jody Talbott), and I love the twist of an old favorite.  More club version,  but definitely works for any intervals.  Plus, I do miss my California...

To Cleanse or Not To Cleanse: Should We Clean Those Pipes Out?

Yeah I’m going to go there.  Yes, I am talking about colons, intestines, and all that yummy stuff.  I have always told it how it is and been honest about my thoughts.  So let us go ahead and go there.  I get asked frequently my thoughts on cleanses and which ones I think are the best.  If you asked me five years ago, I would have given you a totally different answer as I was only aware of those cayenne pepper, lemon juice, sit-on-the-toilet-all-day cleanses.  Yeah, you know what I’m talking about.  See video below.  No one wants a Dumb and Dumber moment.  So what is the purpose of a cleanse and why should we consider?

First, I must say I am fascinated by human anatomy and physiology.  The human body amazes me, quite frankly.  If there is any way I can help optimize the function of my body, I am all about learning, researching, and implementing those healthy behaviors.  Honestly, before I just never really understand why one would do a cleanse.  I mean that part of the body is self cleaning, right?  I also cannot seem to understand why someone would choose to have a colonic either.  Uhhh, what?  Then I continue to hear Dr. Oz harp on the importance of fiber in our diets.  Isn’t fiber for old peeps?  That’s all I really recall hearing.  And then Ding!, it all clicks and totally makes sense to me!  That AHA moment...  Thanks Dr. Oz, you sparked my interest to research further.

Fiber is a natural way to help clean the pipes and there is nothing hokey about it.  Why do those pipes need to be cleaned out?  Your intestines help absorb vitamins and nutrients among other things.  If they are not functioning “regularly” and self cleaning, then nutrients are not absorbed readily, abdominal pain and bloating can occur, and BONUS, parasites can also live and thrive there.  Eeeewwww!  Last thing we want to think about are critters thriving there…

Let’s talk about parasites briefly.  Dr. Susan Evans was on the Dr. Oz show and stated, “There are many types of parasites that can enter our bodies and negatively affect our immune system and overall health.  Walking around barefoot, eating unclean fruits and vegetables, and even drinking untreated water are usually the most common portals of entry for parasites.  A parasitic infestation may include symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, aches, pains, anemia, skin rashes, nervousness, sleep disturbances, allergies, and fatigue.”  I know we do not live in a third world country, but it is a reminder to wash our hands regularly, and wash our fruits and veggies thoroughly.  Clean, sanitary, smart habits here folks.

I do not want to put the fear factor in you, but I now see the importance of a cleanse and why one would want to clean the pipes out from time to time, through natural ways.  Fiber and natural remedies in one’s diet help keep the pipes free and clear.  Your intestines are like a lint trap.  They must be cleaned out on a regular basis otherwise your body has to work harder to function properly.

Besides making sure there is enough fiber in your diet on a regular basis, I have also found a cleanse that I find very gentle, natural, and effective in keeping the lint trap free and clear.   Advocare’s Herbal Cleanse :  Key ingredients in this include fiber, probiotics, and other herbal botanicals.  This is a 10-day cleanse and one where you are free to eat what you want, BUT one would prefer you eat very clean and healthy as we are trying to clean the junk out.  Common sense here.  Nothing crazy here with this cleanse and you will not live on the toilet Dumber and Dumber style.  Check it out!  It is honestly the only cleanse that I have felt comfortable promoting and using.

Bootcamp Playground Workout

It has been a while since I have been back with a video blog post so I thought we would post some summer fun time in the park.  I have to admit, I have been enjoying the summer break with the family and getting some much needed vacation time in.  Where are you vacationing this summer, and are you at your health and fitness goals currently?  Bootcamp workouts are HOT right now and they get real results!  Dynamic Edge is all about bootcamp style.  High intensity, circuit style, workouts that include a combination of strength exercises, cardio, and anaerobic work, tax the heart and the muscles.  No gym required and usually requires no or minimal equipment.  Why not hit the park this summer and take the kids so it is family fun?  They play and you play by kicking your booty!  Get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine with the whole family.

Special thanks to Tristen Hohn for helping demonstrate for Dynamic Edge.  Tristen is a mother of four and committed to a healthy lifestyle for the whole family.  She is a prime example that we can all dare to push our bodies to the limits, even after children, and get real results.  Thanks Tristen!
